10 ‘musts’ for a successful career in PR

I recently spoke with undergrads and grad students at Grady College at UGA. I shared with them 10 MUSTS for a successful career in Public Relations:

1.         Get out and experience the world, be an observer

2.         READ, READ, READ – business, lifestyle, politics. If you are not a lifelong learner, you’ll get left behind.

3.         Find a great internship and a variety of mentors.

4.         Get a Master’s degree – more business, more marketing, more creative – it will help our industry be viewed as more professional.

5.         Get involved in new media and visit newsrooms.

6.         Create trusted relationships and collaborative environments.

7.         Give back.

8.         Get fit – mentally and physically.

9.         Learn to sell and weave together great stories.

10.        No matter what you do or where you want to go – family first.

The speed of news… faster than a tsunami?

Right now I am 35,000 feet above the U.S. heading toward Los Angeles, final destination Kauai. But as we head west, a major tsunami is also crossing the Pacific headed for Hawaii.

Modern connectedness on Delta is allowing us to watch CNN live and check online for flight updates. This scenario is a stark reminder of how fast news spreads and how many ways we have to get news. Within a foot of me, I have my Wall Street Journal, AJC, USA Today … the pillars of yesterday’s news. Also at hand, my Blackberry, laptop with online access and TV screens showing CNN Live.

More as I learn if the tsunami beats us to Hawaii.

I have a feeling we’ll be in LA for a few days.
